Wall of Tears

We were told you could walk to the Wall of Tears, where prisoners were forced to build a long wall made by lava rocks to keep them busy and many died. The prison was closed in 1957 and it is now a memorial to them. We began by walking 4 kilometers down the beach where we came upon the flipper prints of the turtles we were looking for last night. They had laid their eggs sometime during the night.

We also saw the march of the red crabs and iguanas going for a swim.

We stopped for lunch at one of the beaches.
Looking back towards town
We reached the point at the end of the beach and began the 4 kilometer trail through the jungle to the Wall of Tears. We had to stop and register with the park ranger and he told us the trail was closed but we could walk to the lava field, so we continued on and were surprised to find a different world.

We returned to our hostel for a refreshing drink and a swim.

Later, we explored parts of the town we hadn't visited yet. We bought tour tickets for a hike to the Sierra Negra Volcano for tomorrow and had supper in town.
