La Loberia

This morning we paid our lodging bill and made arrangements to have a taxi pick us up at 6:30 AM tomorrow to take us down to the docks to catch the boat to Santa Cruz.

We decided we would head to La Loberia, This is supposed to be a good place to surf and it is also home to marine iguanas and a sea lion nursery. We took a taxi from town to La Loberia. The driver dropped us off and we hiked down to the beach.

At the water's edge we saw many sea lions and their young. They teach their pups to swim in the tide pools. The area was full of sea loins lounging all over the place and the pups were constantly crying for their mothers.

We headed down the beach to hike to a point further down the beach. You had to be very careful walking because of the lava rocks, and you had to be constantly on the look out not to trip on one of the many marine iguanas.

The line down the middle of the walk way is made by the tail of the iguana on his way to the rocks.
The iguanas we saw were pretty big. If you got to close to them they would stand up, hiss and spit. We quickly moved away from them.

You had to be careful walking over the lava rocks as the iguanas blended in so well that you would be almost on top of them before you saw them.

It took about 40 minutes to hike out to the point. The trails are over sand and lava rocks and are marked by white poles along the way. It was a dangerous walk as you had to be careful where you stepped.

The following are pictures from the hike down the beach

On our way back from the point we met Michael, a man from Hawaii who was hiking in his flip flops and a can of Pilsener in his hand. We had a 20 minute conversation with him and he told us of living in the Galapagos for 2 years and of places we should visit while we are here.

We made it back to the beginning of the trail and decided it was pretty hot and we would head back to town. There were no taxis hanging around to pick up tourists so we decided to wait thought we would wait and hope to catch a ride back to town when the next taxi dropped off the next group of visitors. NO Such Luck!

Miguel and Pablo were waiting at the same spot for the next taxi to arrive. We got into a conversation with them and found out they were here surfing and were Argentina. After a conversation about traveling in Argentina, we all decided it would be quicker to walk back to town than wait for a taxi to show up.

A little easier for us then them, as they were carrying their surf boards.

We hit the pavement and it took about twenty-five minutes of walking in the hot sun to make it back to town.

We had a great conversation with Miguel and Pablo and parted ways when we got to the place they were staying.

We then had lunch and went back to the cabana and rested for a couple of hours.  Later this afternoon we will head to the Mockingbird Bar where we will attempt to upload this blog entry.
